According
to records, it was back in 1902 that the first rounds of golf were
played in Prince Edward Island. At that time, a group of golfers
from Charlottetown took to a make-shift course fashioned on the
citys fair grounds to take a few swings. No doubt they had
wooden-shafted clubs and, if they were lucky, maybe used the new
rubber-core balls. To be sure, it was a rough-hewn start to golf
in Canadas smallest province. But from those fertile seeds
has grown a golfing mecca, a place that in a few short years has
made itself known around the world as Canadas golfing destination.
And Prince Edward Island is not content to sit back and marvel at
its accomplishments. Instead, it is growing, improving and moving
towards the next century.
In short, golf just continues to get better in Prince Edward Island.
There is no secret as to why golf has become a lure for tourists
from all parts of Canada and the rest of the world. There is a wide
variety of courses that will appeal to every taste, pocket book
and skill level. Some of the Islands layouts are ranked in
SCORE Magazines Top 50 Canadian courses while others are reserved
for the more casual golfer. But all offer a great golfing experience,
a walk in the park surrounded by the beauty of the sea or lush meadows
or cool, green forests.

Brudenell
River Golf Course

And
in 1999, there will be plenty more of it all. In July, Prince Edward
Islands newest big-news course, Dundarave, will open after
one of the quickest constructions on record. Located next door to
Brudenell River Golf Course,
Dundarave was designed by
Michael Hurdzan, whose best known Canadian creations are Devils
Pulpit near Toronto and Vancouvers Westwood Plateau. Built
in just 117 days, it will be a championship layout which makes great
use of the natural terrain as well as plenty of strategically placed
bunkers.
Also on site will be the new Brudenell
Resort Golf Academy opening in July. The Academy will feature
a short game center with chipping area, 400 yd. double-ended driving
range and 4 acres of tee decks.

The
new course will complement Brudenell, one of the Islands first
championship 18s, and make it the only 36-hole facility in the region.
As well, new accommodations will be added by Rodd Hotels & Resorts,
Atlantic Canadas top golf hotelier.
Of course Brudenell can still hold its own against any other course
in the area. It has played host to many national amateur and professional
events, and with its unusual offering of six par threes, six par
fours and six par fives, it always presents a challenge.
