Gearing Up For Golf 2002 -
Nova Scotian Golfers Ready For Another Season - by Travelin' Tony Tee (Editor @ Large)

Paragon Golf Course, Eden, Nova Scotia This time of year is always an exhilarating one for Golfers in Atlantic Canada. You can feel the anticipation in the air and see the balls fly from the practice tee. Another season is upon us and we're gearing up at driving ranges in Metro and across the Province. The courses are finally open !! Special thanks to the Nova Scotia Golf Association for certain photos, content and external links featured in this piece.

Heading down the "valley way" from Metro Halifax, the closest course is Avon Valley Golf & Country Club, only 40 minutes from the city. Barring a "monsoon" head Pro Andy Tanahill says the course will open on wed., Apr. 19th. This year will debut 3 new tees which will "dramatically alter the look of 2 of the holes, number 9 & 17. The 15th hole also has a new tee box, but not as much of an overhaul. Long known as an exceptionally well kept facility, you'd never guess by how reasonable the green fees are. Just $ 32.00 on Mon and Tue or $ 38.00 Wed - Sun. Call for tee times @ (902) 798-4654.

Apr. 8th marked the opening of Ken-Wo Golf & Country Club in New Minas. Another exquisitely maintained facility, Assistant Pro Rene MacKay says "the course is in great shape, even at this early a stage". MacKay also points out that Ken Wo has "one of the most stocked Pro Shops in Atlantic Canada", and "they are hosting the Nova Scotia Junior Championship this year". There's an early season green fee in effect @ $30.00 - $25.00 after 3:00 PM. This will go up to $40.00 / $25.00 after 4:00 PM as soon as the season gets in to full swing, so get down their now and take advantage ! (902) 681-5388 for tee times.

Just a few miles away, in Centreville, lies the newly expanded Eagle Crest Golf Course. After rave reviews on their scenic new back nine last year, Owner Manager Osbourne Ward says the "views are great, lots of water, trees and hills". Now they're working on the original course, with a revamped 9th hole slated for an end of May opening. "It's a long one at 580 yards, but the new 6000 sq. ft. green will make it a lot easier to land the ball", says Ward. Take advantage of this budding course at great Green fees of $28.00 weekdays / $30.00 weekends (tax in). (902 - 679-3033)

Next up, about an hour and a half from Halifax are two course located in the Kingston/Middleton area. Paragon Golf and Country Club always opens early, and the extra rain should help the dry season at the end of the year. The course is in great shape according to those I've talked to that have played it. Green Fees haven't changed at $35.00, $20.00 after 3:30. And that's a full day pass ! They are welcoming players to Paragon from all over this year with a new toll free phone number - 1-877-414-2554. It's definitely worth the call.

Eden Golf Course, West Paradise, Nova Scotia

It's not every day you get to golf in Paradise, but the aptly named Eden Golf Course provides just such an opportunity. They are just around the corner from Paragon and it makes for a nice little two day excursion, or 36 whole marathon. This year marks the second year of their new back nine. It has shaped up quite nicely according to General Manager Randy   Gallant. They also have a teaching pro on staff. Weekend, all day Green Fees are $33.00, weekdays $31.00 (that's taxes in). Advanced bookings do take priority, so call (902)-665-4257 to get a round in today.

Up next on our Valley journey is the short but challenging Annapolis Royal Golf Club. Manager Jamie MacLeod calls it "tricky", with small upside down bowl greens". At par 70 and 5300 hundred yards, this course, originally opened in 1927, is uncrowded and serene. Green Fees are also a real bargain at $30.00 for the day ! They've finally hit the internet thanks to the NSGA Site. So give them a call for more info @ (902) 532-2064.

The Pines Resort Golf Club - Digby, Nova Scotia

Our final stop on the Evangeline Trails is the "French Shore" which runs from Digby to Yarmouth. Collectively, much of this area is know as the Acadian community of Clare and is home to another hidden golf gem. The Clare Golf Club has is a wonderful facility with a unique down home charm. The layout is hilly and challenging, tightening up on the back 9 with trees and more water in play. With their new Club House ready to open Mid-May, Clare will further it's excellent reputation and green fee players get plenty of opportunity to take in the facility, as the rate ($29.00 weekdays / $34.00 weekends) is for the entire day. Play on !

Our Next feature will be on the courses of the South Shore, most of which are open now. I'll keep you posted as the remainder of the Province's courses open in the coming weeks, as well as where you can tune up your rusty game around Metro. Bookmark our site and come back often for updates.
